Offering for sale an H L Leonard 9 3 piece 2 tip bamboo fly rod. This rod has been refinished at some point and was done very nice. The butt ferrule has the patent date stampings and the butt cap has the Leonard& Mills Co makers stamp as well as the Tournament stamp above. This rod was likely built prior to 1920 and after 1900, I wish there was more information available on Leonard rods as there is some controversy on the dates of the makers stamps.
We are not certain of the model, could be a Model 45 or a Model 22. The rod weighs 4.7 ounces, the ferrules are 10 and 17, the reel seat is all steel. This fits it in to the Model 22 range however it has an agate stripper which could make it a Model 45. One of the tips is 1½ short and appears to be from a ferrule reset.
The mid section had an issue when I bought it and it was sent to Chris Bogart, Shenandoah Rod Co. For repair and he did a great job and the mid is solid. I have used this rod since with a WF4 and a DT5 Cortland line and the rod casts great with both lines, I did prefer the DT5.
This is a slower action rod that I used with wet flies on a good sized river for Browns and it cast out to 60-70 quite easily. This rod is a pleasure to cast and works very well, hard to believe it is 100 years old. Is a Landmark replacement and the tube looks like a Leonard replacement, tube looks fairly new.
