1936 Hardy "The Tournament Rod" Palakona, 8'6, 2 Pce, Staggered Ferrule. A very rare vintage Hardy "The Tournament Rod" 8'6, 2 pce Palakona Fly Rod in Excellent overall condition.
Is E36506 showing manufacture date as 1936. This rod appears to be a one off rod, manufactured by. Hardy to a customers Special Order wishes. Hardy offered this special order service at the time as indicated in the attached extract from their 1934 Angling Catalogue (please see photograph). It is not in the style of the much earlier "Tournament" Rods but may have been specially named by Hardy as it was going to be used specifically in casting tournaments which were extremely popular in the mid 1930's.A Hardy Rod with a staggered ferrule is VERY unusual (it is certainly the first and only Hardy rod I have ever seen with one). However 1936 was around the time that Hardy Palakona Rods were winning many if not most Casting Competions being held in UK and around the World. It was also well known that fly ro.
Ds with a staggered ferrule were known to produce smooth accurate casting due to the parabolic action of the cast introduced by the staggered ferrule. Similar to Sharpes of Aberdeen "88" rod and numerous Pezon et Michel rod models. There is a deliberately chamfered area at the top of the cork butt which may have been introduced due to the customers hold and casting style or possibly just worn through use. The rod looks original with matched ferrules and lovely shaped wooden ferrule plug. It is correct length with Hardy documentation.
I think a very collectible Vintage Hardy Fly Rod worthy of more research. Please see all photographs for condition and ask any questions you may have. This item is in the category "Sporting Goods\Fishing\Rods & Poles".
