Lyon and Coulson (L & C) Crown #301, made by Heddon, 8', equal length 3/2pc, 1 3/4F - HEH or F (3-4wt), 4.5 oz, with new high quality 4 compartment rod sock and period correct black screw-top fiberboard tube with cap. All wraps, guides, high grade cork grip, reel seat are original and in excellent condition.

This is one of the nicest delicate 8', 1 3/4F fly rods I have seen or owned, and the pictures speak for themselves. This L & C Crown #301 shares the classic look of the Heddon #14 Thorobred, with the distinctive red wraps and black tipping. The red agate stripping guide and all other hardware are in excellent condition.

I have polished the whole rod with a Miracle cloth, and it shines. I've attached a picture of the L & C catalog page devoted to their "Crown" product line, which can also be seen on page 169 of Sinclair's "Heddon, The Rod With The Fighting Heart" book. This mildly shaped cork grip has a very comfortable feel to it when casting. T he ferrules are tight, no wobble, and pop when taken apart. None appear to have been re-set.

The ferrules measure 10.5/64 and 17/64. " All sections measure 32 3/8" and are straight as an arrow. There is no other visual evidence of multiple layers of varnish being slathered on, or any other repair, which speaks to the overall quality of the finish. About two weeks ago, I took the Crown #310 and a Heddon #125 out to comparison cast, with my trusty Pflueger Medalist 1492 using a WF3F line. The #125 was like new, and I carefully cast it for less than 20 minutes.

I switched my reel over to the Crown #301 and was really surprised at how well this rod cast comparatively. I had a great time casting both short and moderately long distances, out to maybe 70 feet using my double haul, and it was an absolute pleasure to cast close in for delicate presentations.

Honestly, I didn't want to quit. Like the Heddon #125, it felt light in hand and clearly was a much more delicate rod than the 2F Heddon #10, #14, #115, and #20 I tested in previous weeks.

This rod is a "keeper, " it has clearly been well taken care of, but it also has been fished. It still begs to either be taken out and lovingly fished, or placed prominently in a nice collection. Please ask me questions, or request an additional picture or two.
